How is modern technology and research affecting salesmanship and marketing activities?
Technology has had an impact with e-learning Sales Training. In reality e-learning has little difference to CBT (Computer Based Training) or CAL (Computer Aided Learning). While e-learning has provided a much easier delivery mechanism for the IT department, the impact on the user has been less.
Faster computers have now allowed video to be more readily incorporated in e-learning, however the most common failing with e-learning, CBT and CAL is that most is simply boring. When e-learning comprises pages of text and perhaps a graphic, with a "Continue" button, sales students will get bored quickly and fail to benefit from the material.
E-learning will be a dramatic success when it engages and entertains sales people. This can be done when e-learning includes lots of variety, games and interactive exercises.
When e-learning motivates and engages sales people, it can be of great benefit to both new hires and old salts as well as exposing non sales people to sales techniques. It is of much lower cost than classroom training and far easier and faster to deliver. It also can give feedback to the Sales Manager on areas in which individual sales people are experiencing difficulty and where additional support is required.
e-learning is not a panacea. However it is an ideal way to give introductory training or a review of basic sales principles. - by TonyB
