One of the most interesting and powerful NLP (Nuero Linguistic Programming) techniques that I am asked to teach on a regular basis is the Hand Shake Interrupt made famous by Milton Erickson and of course Derren Brown.

The Handshake pattern interrupt is a very powerful way to induce rapid Hypnosis, and I use it regularly in NLP demonstrations to show how easy it is to learn how to hypnotise someone...

As you may or may not know the handshake interrupt is simply interrupting the process of a handshake, (which causes a momentary blank in the brain)

and bringing the subjects hand up to their face, whilst using hypnotic NLP language to bring them into a trance state.

I very occasionally use it on the street, once with a doorman a la Derren Brown(but that’s another story), however I believe that as an NLP technique it is not the most covert way to induce a mild trance...

So as part of my ongoing commitment to teaching you NLP Skills that you can use in your everyday life here is an example of Derren and Milton's NLP technique that you can use in the real world!

It’s very simple, however please remember to use the correct tonality (as covered in the article Telling Tales - Body Language, NLP, Persuasion & The Secrets of Winning at Poker & Life.)

Hi my name is Marc (pause) ...perhaps you've heard of me......?

As they go on a (transderivational) search I place in an embedded command!

In NLP and Embedded Command is a command hidden in a conversation that the person will act on subconsciously...

The Embed I would usually add is:

"I'm sure were going to work well together"

The reply is invariably "YES" and we start the meeting.

If you work in telephone sales this is a great opener!

If I really want to space them out and be slightly less covert.

I'll add in another line, as they go into the search,

"You know when your mind just goes (pause) blank."

This again is using NLP and suggestion to access the state of Amnesia / Confusion which Derren Brown also uses regulary

"Mmmm (anchor) I'm sure were going to work well together"

For a geater understanding of NLP & Anchoring please read my article

"Secrets of Advanced Persuasion Skills & NLP Anchoring"

Using the "Mmmm" as an anchor means I can fire it off during the meeting, and as they go into a light trance and fire in more embeds/ pace and lead.

Because the Transderivational Search is quite short I add the embedded command very quickly.

This is why I add the "MMMmmm" anchor as it’s a very useful trance state anchor which I can fire throughout the meeting.

As for the "MMMmmm" anchor rather than make the noise I will usually use a pen tapping on a desk, or jangling keys or clicking the top of a ball point pen.

I've found that the results are very effective...

I also combine this NLP technique with my own covert variation of Derren Browns handshake interrupt, which is even more effective.

Of course the key thing to remember is your tonality and of course your own state.

I’m sure you can begin to think about the many ways this powerful NLP skill can be applied in throughout your life.

Anyway that’s all for now, go play!
