Some might consider that as prospecting but I view it as a marketing function.

I would agree with AZ. When you send out mail or email, you are basically qualifying your list. Then you would prospect that list based on your results from the mail/email.

I doubt if Rainmaker would call the letters she sends prospecting. The prospecting is when she calls the people that she sent letters to.

Just checking.

Based on what she described, I think her letters are part of a sophisticated, well-strategized, direct marketing campaign which probably is also reflected in her follow up calls. "Marketing", "prospecting"...what difference does it make? She gets results...that's the bottom line.

I know others who have run similar campaigns with excellent success. I thought her posts on the subject were instructive.

The original question asked if prospecting is a marketing function.

Everybody gets results. It's just a matter of whether you're happy with those results.

Prospecting is just one of the two? Phone or face to face?

Cold Calling (telephone) and Cold Canvassing (face-to-face) are two of the many different ways to identify prospects.

That's one of the three ways of contacting a prospect; phone, mail, and in-person.

Mail is another way to identify prospects but IMHO it's closer to promotion than it is to prospecting.

What other prospecting methods do you recommend?

What works great for one person might not work at all for another but referrals (bird dogs, networking, recommendations, family and friends, sphere of influence, sales lead clubs) seem to work well for most people.
