Great answer.

Fun thread.

The way I see it, prospecting is contacting potential customers (active) instead of waiting for potential customers to contact you (passive).

That is one perspective.

Another perspective is that "Prospecting" is the process of finding qualified prospects. This process would encompass all forms of lead generation and extend through the pre-qualification step.

The use of the word "prospecting" in selling is probably somewhat metaphoric, having been derived from the mining term. It works as a metaphor, of course, because it describes a multistage process, just as your definition implies. Finding and testing.

This works for me too. With this "perspective" it doesn't make sense to me that prospecting is a marketing function.

Maybe it is a function for both the marketing department and the sales department?

If "Qualifying" is part of prospecting who in the marketing department would do that?

Maybe "qualifying" isn't that big a part of prospecting.

Maybe the marketing department and the sales department can work on getting leads in their own ways.
