I didn't mean it like that. I know I would probably be a little nervous putting in a call to somone famous.

I email them first with questions I have. I always give them my phone number in the email so that they can call or write depending on how they prefer to respond. A lot of times they will call me. Sometimes they respond with a good time for you to call them.

I guess I don't think of these people as being famous. I look at it like a client calling me. I would never want them to hesitate to ask me a question, so I don't hesitate to ask these authors about their work.

Pros:

Cons:
  • No coach/trainer to correct you in your interpretation or application.
  • No involvement with coach/trainer or course participants such as question and answer sessions, role playing, etc.
  • No ability to see/watch the trainer execute the skills presented so no ability to model his/her performance.
Excellent points. I would also add that some people just can't make the connection between information and application. The one-on-one help from a trainer for these people makes all the difference in the world.

I went to school with a guy who aced all of his book work but almost failed the hands on portion (to my pleasure ).

I was referring to those people who have difficulties making the connection, those who can't.

Oh yeah, I've seen this myself on more than one occassion. The story was always the same... great with books not so great in the field.

Thanks for the feedback, I've done very little of my learning from books, but after reading this string will definetly investigate further.

Wow, that's cool Derek. Did you have to work up the nerve to make the call?
LOL
