Unfortunately that scenario is fairly common I think.

My first sales was $900. It happened when I sold my own handphone to a friend. It was a good salestalk because I tried to convince a thrifty friend to buy my phone.

Did you sell your phone because you weren't satisfied with it? Have you found something you like better? I can't imagine a $900 phone. What kind was it?

Actually, I bought the phone in a package deal. The phone was good. I sold it because I'm in need of cash. $700 was the cost of the phone unit. I convinced my friend to buy all my original phone accessories such as bluetooth headset, housings, leather pouch and more. It ended up a prize of $900. That's it!

My most memorable sale was about 20 years ago. I sold my first comedy bits to a Detroit FM morning show personality.

The first cheque was only for $40, but knowing that something I wrote was going to be used on the air was much more gratifying than the dollar amount.

By the way, I'm sure the commission on the $11 million sale mentioned above was gratifying too, don't get me wrong!

My best sale, strangely enough, is not the one that earned me the largest commission...at least, directly.

I closed a standard deal to a homeonwer three years ago. I worked my tail off to perform and deliver the goods, as promised. The following year I closed two similar deals on the same street. Last year I closed on three more nieghbors, plus two family members of the original homeowner.
I'd say by far, that original sale alone has earned me almost double what my largest deal earned by itself.

You make a great point. I speak to business owners all the time about understanding the 'Lifetime Value of a Customer'. I don't know of all the sales you mentioned came as a result of the first sale, but if they did, that customers value to you wasn't just one sale, one check. It became 7 customers. That's a powerful story.

Mine was kinda funny; Back in the olden days, when we built and sold our own PC's, and Michael Dell was putting classifies ad's in the journal, I had a sales call at a major school district.

I was to demo one of our PC's to the superintendent for a new deal to outfit the whole district with new computers. This was when a PC XT (4.77Mhz, amber screen, 2 floppies) was about 6K.

Well, I went on and on about the value of a local supplier, the close nature of the relationship, the fact that PC's were no different than other electronics and easy to build and maintain, the excellent quality and service offered by a local supplier versus a chain and so on..

Then, I turned and flipped the switch, and up came a puff of smoke. No screen, no lights, just the nasty smell of plastic in the air.

Needless to say I was without words, wide eyed and dumbstruck. Thinking on my feet, I excused myself for a monet, ran back to the car, grabbed a power supply and screwdriver, ran back and fixed it in a matter of moments.

He said that I "walked my talk" or something like that and gave us a deal for 20 units or so. We did business with them for years.

My best sale ever was the first sale I made when I founded my company. I made a lot of mistakes with that one and I worked far harder then needed for it. But... I closed my first sale, from my very first call.

Millions in sales for others over the years; many sales for myself since then.

Most importantly, I did it for me. It wasn't a big sale but it's the one I'm definitely most proud of!
