Does anybody want to offer an opinion as to which, genenerally, is the stronger motivator: Fear of Loss or Desire for Gain?

IMO, it depends. Fear of Loss could be losing out on a special price or a limited time offer. Desire for gain is more quality of life issue.
I think it depends on the sales situation.
