hello all-
i am attempting to establish a training program and develope trainees all at the same time... self-taught of course. this forum looks like it could be a huge help. am i just totally impatient, or do some people just not get it- sales ability is like a god-given talent. of course you have to continue to learn and develope your abilities, but some people will just never be able to do it. am i way off base here?

Welcome to the forum. What kind of sales training do you offer?

I am "attempting" to offer training in door-to-door sales. Not so much consultative, but more assumptive styles. I am the only female in my companys' sales force, (which totals more than 50 full-time sales reps) so my sales manager belives that I potentially have more of a nurturing-type personality than most sales reps. I have to admitt though, that I am more than slightly frustrated with the aptitude of my present pupils.

Welcome to the community Jamiserene.

Here is a question to ponder. Is the challenge the training, the trainer, the trainees, or could it be something else?

Selling is a learned skill, like any other. When we talk about people who are "born salesmen" what we usually mean is someone who is outgoing, talkative and has some charm. Certainly good qualities but not what sales is all about.

Yes, the frustrating part of being a sales manager, sales trainer, etc. is that in spite of your best efforts some people just don't "get it." There are no easy ways to success in sales. Some people are simply more motivated than others. Part of what makes a salesperson a salesperson is competitive drive. We all have that in varying degrees. Do not expect people to have your level of drive and ambiition. The successful manager, trainer, etc. realizes the ultimate challenge...get the best performance out of each salesperson. Then it is simple. Is their best up to your standard? If so, you have done a great job.

If not, start your thinking process at the beginning. Why did you hire the person in the first place? Hiring the wrong people is a recipe for disaster. Hire the right people and teach them. It will make your job much easier.

If it is ok to post a referral link here, take a look at this and see if it gives you some thought starters.

Best of luck to you.

What does "attempting" mean?

That sounds interesting. Can you go into more detail?

Do you and your sales manager feel this is an "asset" to a sales trainer?

What about your pupils behavior has been most frustrating?

What type of training are you currently using? Anyone can learn the basics of sales. You can create likeability through empathy. Charisma, sense of humor, being quick on your feet...those really can't be taught.

Hi Jamiserene. Is the training you're giving forced on the salespeople or is attendance voluntary?
