Hello

I'm new the site and i'm making a career change.

so it's a little scarry.

i've been a resturant manager for 13 years.

Why change I want to Make more money, and get paid for the effort I put into my career.

so thats it.

I'm decided to go into car sales.

any advice I'm a sponge.

Welcome to the forum. Welcome to sales. Welcome to the car business. You do not say if you have already taken a job at a dealership. If not perhaps I can give you some tips that would help. If so, do not fear making a change if you think you are not at the "right store for you".

Look at the advertising done by dealerships you would consider working at. As a new person you will be depending on "floor traffic". You need to be a at a store that will bring your initial customers to you.

Next, look at the franchise itself. Right now imports are enjoying a tremendous run.

When you have narrowed your search down, look at the dealership itself. Inventories are critical in the auto sales business. You must have product to sell.

Chances are you will start in the new vehicle department. The reasoning is simple. Product knowledge is critical in any sales career and the car biz is no different. It is difficult enough to learn everything about one line of vehicles, much less all the models, features, etc. of the competitive brands that are in your used car department.

Direct advice for new car salespeople. Realize that you are building a business for yourself and the monetary rewards are unbelievable when you get it right.

Well I Have Made the Change.
I decide to go with Chevrolet here in st.louis

It's a union store 45 hour work week rotating 3 day weekend every 4 weeks.

trafic now is scary, but I understand now is the time to build MY Business.

This is something the other guys dont seem to get or care.
I cant sit by idle and wait for customers.

Hi Netguy34. I'd imagine sitting around watching the glass would get old real quick. Have you discovered any effective ways to generate your own leads?

Welcome to the forum netguy, I'm also new to the car sales business. Masteri5 gives great info, take it and use it. The best advice I have for you is, while you are sitting there looking at an empty lot make sure your phone is stuck to your ear. Find out if your dealership has a list of "orphan owners" or people who have bought there and their salesman have left. send them letters and call them when you dont have ups. business has slowed down alot so you will want to generate your own traffic. create newsletters every few month and send them to those orphan owners to keep your name fresh in their heads. Prospecting is very important in this business so get your name out there.
I'm lucky to have a great mentor at my store who has been in the business 18 years and focuses as much on helping me out as he does making his own money. Hopefully you have someone at your store who can help you with tips on generating business.

Does this mean you can only work 45 hrs.? I'm guessing no...so if not be there as much as you can stand at first especially when it is busy and you can catch overflow ups. But make sure you dont wear yourself out then you would hate the business. And remember even when you leave the lot you are still a car salesman. on your way home if you go to the grocery store, or out to eat, whatever you do talk about cars and keep business cards with you at all times.
