Spend $25 On Your Career.

Its been a strong feature of my life to read at least one book a week. At one time I read more than one book - much more, so many in fact that a psychiatrist would be worried about my sanity. My only excuse is that I was finishing off my education and the school I attended were not that keen on giving lectures on the birth of the retail age and self service supermarkets, selling and advertising and why people buy, I wish they did, it might have served a much better purpose than telling us why people steal and what would happen to them in the afterlife for doing so.

Here's 3 books I want you to read and buy, the 1st one is rather unusual, because the subject Sam Walton of Walmart was unusual, lets look at him as a salesman just like ourselves, the next book is about Randolph William Hearst, the newspaper publisher, another strange sort of guy who I rather identify with, the 3rd book is about a forgotten genius, a man called Conde Nast, publisher of Vogue and Better Homes & Gardens. For about $25 dollars you can buy all three books on Amazon, $25, whilst you are reading them ask yourself what makes this guy tick, why was he a success, how was he different?

Sam Walton, Made In America, Author John Huey, worth $199.00

The Hearsts: Father and Son. Author Jack Casserly. Publ Rinehart.

The Man Who Was Vogue: The life and times of Conde Nast. Author Caroline Seebohm.

I had not heard of any of these books but I bought them anyway. If you say they are good I believe it.

Houston thank you for the implied compliment.

The Sam Walton books is kind of strange, a one -off. The Hearsts are for me the most important figures in USA business history, maybe because old man Hearst was such an interesting character, Conde was rather sweet and you gain insights into NY scene cica 1930 - 1960. To understand sales you need to appreciate the depth and scope of the USA, to do so lets argue that salesmen built the USA, salesmen and hustlers opened up the West, for instance the Iron Horse was built to sell passengers railway tickets, the State of Washington magnificent trees were sawn down to sell people houses, coal was dug to sell people warmth and electricity.

American Greatest Pioneers books for salesmen to read are the biographies of J D Rockefeller [Standard Oil New Jersey / now EXXON] Paul Getty and Louis B Mayer and MGM. In England we have just three men in this league, one refused interviews, would not authorise books on his life and became a recluse, that being Isaac Wolfson [ Great Universal Stores] you then have Simon Marks and Israel Seiff [Marks and Spencers Retail] all these men were in some respects salesmen. Wolfson sold clocks on Manchester Market, a man called Rose bought the lot just to engage him in conversation, he offered him a job, Wolfson ended up worth about £3 billion, and all in sales.

Shinningstar: Yes, they are free, ask your local library do they have copies in their vaults.

Thanks for the recommendations. As financial success stories go, those are very fine examples.

What do you think Houston?

Well, thanks Incidentally for the good suggestion. I just hope the librarian will provide me a copy. I'm very much serious to read about it.
