I know nothing about "persuasion" and was hoping others might provide a few tips that apply to sales and/or marketing.

Here's a tip: appeal to your audience's self-interest.

How? Structure your sales and marketing messages so that they answer the question, "What's in it for me?"

I agree. If they see the BENEFIT, they "pursuade" themselves to buy.

If you feel you have to "persuade" someone to buy your product or service, you probably haven't been effective in demonstrating how it will help them. Once again, in order to do this, you need to learn what is important to the other person. Once you have this information, you can adapt your presentation to address their specific issues or concerns.

As Jolly Roger pointed out, ask questions. My experience has taught me that most people will give you all the information you need to help them make an educated buying decision. And, many people will persuade themselves providing they have the opportunity to talk and express their objectives, concerns, wants, needs, likes & dislikes.

Hi,

As far as persuasion, I ask customers questions that they cannot answer with a "No" or negative reply, such as "wouldn't you like to reduce your cyle time and increase your threough-put?" or "wouldn't you like to eliminate toxic primers from your process and substitute with a "green, clean" technology?" They must answer yes to the string of questions. I then proceed to show how our technology/service/product can replace those other process at a lower cost and higher through put. At that point the customer is ready and willing to listen and consider your offering.

The truth is good enough. You stick to the truth about whatever it is and that is good enough. Once you start streching out there, people pick up on that and it sounds as though your desperate. I have had people give me presentations on things and they dont sound persuasive they sound desperate, and (I) believe that if you present well and are truly confident it what you do. thats all the persuasion you will need. But thats just my opinion.

Hi Kristina-

Yes, for some products/services that works....but I am selling a product that replaces an exisiting process that works, so in order to convince the customer that we have an advantage (customer thinks"if its not broke..don't fix it"), I use persuasive questions such as "Wouldn't you like to save more money on your Workmens Comp. insurance?" "Wouldn't you like to eliminate the hazardous chemical etch process?" "Wouldn't you like to reduce your cleaning cycle from four steps to one step?" Etc. Otherwise the customer wouldn't be interested in buying our expensive system. Once they have convinced themselves that our system is worthwhile considering, then the selling can begin.
