Cool Am I Just Being Paranoid.....

Or does a boss who doesn't REALLY speak to you mean that he is growing tired of you when he spoke to you before? You see, I work in a small business higher end jewelry store in Vermont where BOTH of the owners work along side me with: 1 jeweler, and 1 other sales rep who has the same responsibilities as I do, and I used to be struggling in the beginning months (first few months) of the job (I'm completing my fourth) and I used to always be getting these "words of wisdom" from the owners....and lately I have been improving DRASTICALLY (i.e. joining this forum), and I have not been hearing much. I have been more of a self starter, and I follow through with the projects that I am assigned with minimal involvement of my bosses (which is what was the issue before...I worried too much and was too much of a perfectionist).
NOW that I am doing what I have percieved as what they wanted me to do...(mainly one of my bosses that had originally showed displeasure to my "progress" in the ways of common sense in the business) I am hearing less and less from them.
Would you percieve this silence (if this were you) as a sign of resolution to my employer's original cause for concern....or as a sign that I had reached the "point of no return" wherein it would not matter as to what I would do after the point when my boss had originally spoke of his dissapointment even though it has been addressed and has not been an issue as of recent?

Please....any insight from personal experience would be GREATLY appreciated, my boss is VERY old fashioned and prefers as little talking as possible with actions as his main language....which has made him VERY hard to read.

Sincerely,
David

I couldn't take the suspense. Could you ask the owners for feedback on your performance?

Mikey,
I would love to say that your answer would be the solution to my problem....but unfortunately...I already have (and equally as bad, I was not given a "straight forward" answer). I was told that "establishing a permanent foothold" in this company....is impossible. I was told that sometimes no matter how hard some people try sometimes, that business expenses are business expenses, and thus....leaving me between a rock....and a hard place.
You see.....I feel that a job where you sacrifice as much as I am (I even study what I have to do to improve at home), should provide security for the individual that is willing to "do whatever it takes to make it work well"...right?

You tell me ...

If you were to ask me I'd say that there is no security at a job. None. However, there is security in possessing well developed sales skills.

David are you attempting to move up a ladder that doesn't exist?

SalesCoach,
My predicament lies within the fact that I am trying to find stability in sales....when the profession itself implies uncertainty. I just find myself frustrated at the fact that as hard as I kill myself to become what they want me to be.....their indifference provides me with a sense of not so much "them not caring" as it is "business is business". And the part that bugs me is that they speak of having someone to "share the load" with because they are terribly over-exerted (as you have read in my thread).....and I am doing WHATEVER they ask....and it still does not seem to provide me any certainty. I have honestly had jobs I have done half as much for that have given me more security than this...and I don't really know how to take this, because they could be just meaning that "life is uncertain" or they could be meaning that I am not going to find what I am looking for here.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Sincerely,
David

Become proficient at prospecting and selling and you'll find the security you seek.

I think most people who are fairly new to a company want and actually need regular feedback to ensure they are on track and meeting expectations.

The fact that you’re not getting much feedback now combined with the fact that your boss prefers action over words and that you’ve improved your performance and your now seeing projects thru would indicate to me that your actually meeting expectations.

If he had a problem surely he’d be giving you negative feedback.

My advise would be to make sure you don’t question your position in the store too much or you’ll really begin to doubt yourself and you’ll loose self confidence. From there you run the risk of focusing on the wrong things and then you will get the wrong type of attention from your boss.

Do your best, have your intention and integrity in place and if it doesn’t work out then its not meant to be.

Worry makes you old and miserable, don’t do it to yourself.

Hope that helps.

Snowman,
Thank you sincerely....I am just stressing out because I am newly engaged to the girl I have ALWAYS wanted, and her parents don't care HOW great I am to their daughter....that untill I have a 401K and can end up with as bright as a future as her (she's inheriting a very succesful flooring business), that she "could do better". Not that I am worried about her leaving me...but moreso that I am trying to be respectful to her familie's wishes because family is VERY important to me . I am 24 years old, with no college education because of a mountain biking accident that caused me to lose my financial aid, and unfortunately...there are not all that many oppurtunities in the area of Vermont that I live in, so I am just stressing to hold onto this if I can. It is just very hard since the owner's son started working here, because he lives with his father and has an un-natural advantage over me, and it makes me a little nervous that I might eventually be pushed out because I could never compete with family...you know?

But thank you for helping me look at this the best way I can!

Sincerely,
David
