SEO should never be done by any tool, you can choose yours keywords by a tool from wordtracker but the pages of site should be optimized manually

Well you can use programs with your SEO efforts. Are you manually going to check your keyword density for every page for example? Good luck as its very time consuming.

I use wordtracker. It's a great tool, but a little pricey for a newbie like me. If you'd like to try keyword analysis, they do you have a watered down version of it.

Tools are great to seed up the process, but dont come to depend on them. On that note www.goodkeywords.com is a great nifty little tool and webceo.com is great too, they have a free version, not much different from the paid one, except limitations.

I have used wordtracker as well in the past however I think that there are plenty of free tools out there which can offer similar results.

Sorry to bump and old thread, but there are VERY GOOD free tools out there to help you optimize your site. I will list a few of my favorites in a minute. One thing to be aware of is that not all optimizing occurs on your site. For instance, you need backlinks. Where do you get them? Why not see where your competition got them.... Great tools here that can save you a ton of time. Find out what is working for the competition and duplicate some of it. It works.

Check how you show up for searches up to 1000 places in Google, yahoo, MSN, and ask all at the same time. Huge time saver for me. Also helps you know what is working.

Check your google page rank. Things start really happening when you are 2 and over in my opinion.

I'll try to post more later, but I can tell you with some dilligent effort, I went from 0 to top 10 on my site www.telephoneguru.net in under 2 months. And as you can see, I am not a pro.

Thanks, T.G. I haven't checked out the sites yet, but that looks like some very valuable info. Thanks for your post.

Jim,
My firm offers SEO, but here are a few good free web-based tools:

Keyword Generation:

http://tools.seobook.com/general/keyword
http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com
http://google.com/trends

Link Popularity:
http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com/link-popularity/
http://www.marketleap.com/publinkpop/default.htm

Rankings Checker:
http://www.mikes-marketing-tools.com/ranking-reports/

These should give you a pretty good start with SEO research. If you need more tips or would like to offload some of your SEO work, I know of a great firm which could help. Just PM me.
