boiler-room type sales?

Sales Training »
Hi everyone. I'm curious about boiler-room type sales. I heard that term once from a friend who said he used to do "boiler-room type sales". What does it mean and where does the term originate?

Boiler room sales is when you get a group of salespeople together in a room and start dialing for dollars. -Jolly Roger

Check out the movie "boiler room" by Ben Younger also In the movie "the persuit of Happyness" with Will Smith you see this same thing going on. I think it is a very strategic way to make money. Providing good scripts and training are given to those doing the calling.

I often accept calls from someone who is dialing because they know what they are doing on the phone. But then they transfer me to their so called manager or Senior Loan Officer who has no phone skills what so ever and I treat him like the inexperienced person he is as more often than not he does not understand anything else. -Jorel

Agggh! This type of sales gives our profession a really bad name!

Yes you may make money working this way, but no long term cash as you have to destroy your buyer to get the sale on your terms. Horrible. thmbdn2; -Julian
