Ever thought about Linux?
I have several PC's at home, Windows, Mac, and now Linux. I've messed with Linux over the years and it is a hassle, but I can tell you that once you get it working - wow.
I can have my Linux PC up (an old 586 with an 80gig drive) up and running before the windows splash screen goes away. I can flip back and forth between as many desktops as I want in a blink, my hard drive never sounds like a pop corn machine, I can tinker with EVERYTHING, and theres oodles of free software out there for you work-at-home-on-a-tight-budget types. The only thing I haven't found is a great sales and contact manger tool. I saw one, the name escapes me, that seems pretty comprehensive but as a whole, nada'. There doesn't seem to the the "Act" or "Goldmine" of the Linux world that I have found yet. Installing programs leaves something to be desired too, as my daughter would say "uh, yea, just a little". If you haven't tried it, get an old PC and download a distribution and have at it. I just set my sister in law up with an old 486 box that was junk in our Telco room, and she uses it every day for surfing, writing, and all sorts of stuff, she loves it. My personal favorite is "Ubuntu", go to www.ubuntu.com and get the program, dig out a dusty PC with a hard drive and a CD rom player and give it a shot. You may want to use a DVD instead, because it's all on one CD that way. If you want some help drop me a note on my blog; http://lookingintotheabyss.blogspot.com/ |

Someone at a computer store told me about this before I got my new computer with windows XP. They said I wouldn't notice much of a difference. My computer is pretty fast and so are these at work.
