Hello from Georgia

I am excited to have come across this web site. I've been is sales for about 17 months. I have been able to learn alot and enjoy what I do. I work at a small dealership as a car saleman and I'm looking for ways to increase my sales. At my dealership we are lucky to get one prospect to walk through the door a day. I do alot of prospecting, hanging flyers, and constantly talking to people to generate sales. But, it dosen't seem to work because I'm actually thinkig of leaving this dealership to go to another. I was never given any training when I started and evrything I've learned is self taught. I am constantly reading books, articles, or asking other saleman for advice. I will appreciate any advice given to me.

Hi Damien,

Welcome to the boards..

A great recommendation for the meat and potatoes of the car sales biz is a book titled The Sales Advocate.

There's good bucks to be made in the business. A good salesman, at the right dealership can easily make 6 figures.

I don't think you need me to tell you that being at a slow dealership is a rough gig. Move on without hesitation if you have to.

I worked on the road in cars sales doing super/slasher sales which are 4-5 day, aggressively advertised sales events. We cleared out dealership's used car inventories; putting up 125k+ in front end gross in 4 days which is more than they'd typically do in a month.

I was making 4-6 grand per week and working on avg. 12 days per month. The down side was I was living out of hotels but I was single, saw the country and had a blast.

If you plan on staying with the car business, pound out the sales (used cars is where the money is at) all you can for a year, learn everything you can and get into F&I... that's where the real wood is made.

Good luck... read all these threads and ask a lot of questions. There's a few really knowledgeable guys around here.

Damien:

I'll echo bluenotes comments. It's time to go if your not being trained. After 17 months it won't get better with that dealer. Go on interviews with dealerships where you can interview them. They must convince you that training is ongoing and consistent. Try "Mystery Shopping" at dealers to see how you are treated by the salespeople. Talk with salespeople at other dealers to find out about a dealer.

There are people posting to this site that can help you, help yourself.

I saw post by Mike Whitty who has sales training web sites. Even with 17 months experience you must learn the sales process. In automobile sales it is known as "The Road to the Sale" It's critical to your success that you learn each step. I also agree with bluenote, used cars is where its at for making money. You may be surprised to know that many dealers carry a new cars franchise just to gain credibility for their profit producing used car business.

Good luck in your quest.

Thanks Gregoire and bluenote

I realize now that I have a dead end job and have started looking for a better one. I had a interview with Modern Woodman of America to sell insurance today and they wanted to higher me on the spot but I've been getting so many hits from my resume on Monster that I want to go on a few more interviews before making a decision. I also have a interview with the Pepsi cola company on June 6th for a position as a route salesman. I'm looking for a company that will have continuous training and room for growth. I like sales and enjoy meeting people but I need to be where I can make a good income. I just hope I can hold out until the right position comes along.

Right on Damien.

I have always lived by the philosophy that if I'm not happy with my current situation, I stopped immediately. Didn't matter if it was a woman or a sales job. If you're not treating me right... I'm out
