Where they come from
As we grow up we make many decisions about what things mean to us. Often we make sense of things without much experience in a particular area in life.
Usually when this happens we either:
- Jump to conclusions that are often limited and sometimes just wrong altogether
Or- Go along with someone else’s point of view that is also often limited and sometimes just wrong altogether
Hopefully these things do not affect us too much in life and usually they do not. In this case we just go through life “blissfully unaware”, that there may be a better way of viewing the situation.
How they control you
In the worst cases we believe something that is completely wrong and totally limiting and disempowering yet we don’t even question it because we are unaware that its wrong and effecting us in a negative way.
An example of this might be the belief that we “never loose weight no matter how hard we try so what’s the point”.
We could have arrived at this belief when we attempted to loose weight on a number of occasions and failed. This is a very common belief as it backs up our belief that “it’s out of my control so it’s a waste of time”.
How to change them
It is really very simple, our beliefs either empower us and help us achieve and enjoy more of life or they disempower us and take away our ability to achieve and enjoy more.
Clearly what we want to do is focus on increasing anything that empowers us and decreasing everything that disempowers us or has a negative effect.
You will be happy to know that changing your beliefs is easier than you think. It is so easy in fact that it can be done instantly. Changing your beliefs happens in an instant, its getting ready to change and staying changed that takes the time.
The first thing we need to do is identify the beliefs we have on a regular or daily basis that affect our lives for the better or the worst.
List you negative or limiting beliefs below, as many as possible.
Example, “I never loose weight no matter how hard I try”
List you positive or empowering beliefs below, as many as possible.
Example, “I can loose weight when I stay focused and disciplined on an effective plan”
Your negative or disempowering beliefs
Look back over your negative or disempowering beliefs to remind yourself how they affect you. Now choose the three most meaningful and damaging beliefs you have and write in your own words why they affect you so much. How does it feel? What do they mean to you?
One.
How does it make you feel?
What does this mean to you?
Two.
How does it make you feel?
What does this mean to you?
Three.
How does it make you feel?
What does this mean to you?
Substitute positive for negative.
Now you know what disempowering beliefs you have you are well on the way to eliminating them from your life.
The keys to changing negative beliefs to positive are:- Being aware of the beliefs that have been affecting your life. You now know your top three as a starting point.
- Staying alert to when you use there beliefs. Most of the time just knowing about them and how they affect you will be enough for your mind to avoid using them continually. Sometimes you will get beliefs that reappear a few times, no problem just be aware and remind your self how negative these are.
- Staying focused on these beliefs. Do this by having them on your daily card and reading them at least 3 times per day.
- Write about your experiences in your journal, this is very powerful and will help you review all your learning during the program and ingrain the changes quickly.
