Hi everyone, newbie at sales

I'm Brian, and I'm about to start my first ever sales position.

Pretty nervous, VERY nervous actually. I'm an introvert with some social anxiety issues. I'm hoping maybe this type of position will give me some learning experiences on dealing with people better.

Anyone with any advice on my first meeting? I'm meeting with pre-qualified appointments. These are mid-sized merchants and I'm selling payment processing services/equipment.

The company gave me this lengthy, sleazy sounding script that just doesn't sound like something I'd say at all. I don't walk around patting everyone on the back, all chipper and outgoing all the time, although I'm not a jerk either.

It also seems impossible to memorize all of this stuff, along with all these different products and services. How am I supposed to just know all of this stuff right off the bat? What happens if they ask me questions I don't know immediately?

Should I have a script in front of me to go off of? Or should I leave that in the car?

Should I forget the script and just talk? Just study the products/services and prices or should I stick with the script?

Any advice for a newbie would be MUCH appreciated.

Memorize the script

Brian, welcome to the board,

First, memorize the script. Say it over and over til you have it nailed.

Then when you get in front of the pre-set appointment you won't have to fret about what to say.

Remember to ask for the order before you leave. That should be a part of the script as well.

Good luck. Practice makes perfect.

Just relax and be yourself.
When you’re making your approach to new prospects keep one thing in mind on the first call.

  • All you want to do is make contact and take the prospect from totally unaware of you or your company to aware, that’s all. If that’s the intent of your first call then you cant be rejected or knocked back.
  • Try something like this……………. Hi my name is ______________from __________. I’m in the area talking to businesses about there _______________. All I’m doing today is dropping in some information, having a chat and seeing if we should go any further, are you ok to have a chat for about 10 minutes?

There is no lengthy script to learn and it will not cause prospects to resist you when you hit them with some worn-out old approach.

My advice to you is be real, relax, make contacts and then work the prospects from there. Don’t try to sell the first time you meet someone unless you are ready for a fair amount of resistance.

Best of luck,
Tony

Welcome to the community Brian.

If your company provided you with a script then IMO you should learn and use that script... initially.

Thank you for all the responses.

My biggest problem is this LENGTHY contract, that even I don't understand. There's all of these fees they didn't explain during training and I don't know what applies to what service and what not. It's very confusing.

Trying to sell a lengthy and complicated contract is a task in itself.

Will the company provide you with a mentor to accompany you on your first sales calls?

It's asking a lot to have a new person swallow the whole enchilada when so much is at stake.

I have a team leader, but by phone only.

They only gave us one 8 hour day of training and a couple of days to study.

I'm considering just throwing out the script and just going in and talking like I do to my friends and see what happens. This script seems silly and stupid to me.

I just hope I know how to fill this contract out!

Actually, it's not all as bad as it seems up front.

I vote against making calls without memorizing the script and understanding the contract well enough to explain it.

Use the salami technique to get it all into perspective. Since you're new to sales the salami technique to problem solving is to slice the big chunk into small slices and chew on them individually.

Set short term goals for yourself.

Then ask yourself why you signed up for this kind torture? I'm sure there's a good reason in there somewhere.

Without a script, previous experience or training what do you suppose you would say to these valuable prequalified leads?

What is it about the script that you don't like?
