Amusing comeback
When I get the housewife on the phone whose first words after my intro are, "I'm busy cooking", I've replied "I wonder what smelled so good. What are you cooking?" which can lead to an interesting conversation.
(before I get jumped on, the comeback isn't a rebuttal because an offer hasn't been made yet). Some people will reject immediately just you based on who you represent and they may know what you're about to say. So be prepared to give a good presentation after you get their attention (good question for all: would you consider this type of comeback to be part of a presentation?) -Wonderboy

I would consider that part of "approach" not "presentation". -AZBroker
Do you consider your "comeback" as part of a presentation? What were you presenting? -Houston

Sounds sensible. -Wonderboy
JI agree with AZBroker - it would be an approach that I would try but not really one that I would teach others. Do you find you turn some off after saying that and what do you do when you here a males voice saying "I am busy in the shed". It is great to have a line to pick up one type of demographic - but what about the others?:dun -Snowboy
Amusing - Yes
Effective - No -Geekust
has anyone replied do you smell what I am cooking -rich34232

I agree with most of the others, but it is probably your only chance in that situation to engage in conversation (the respondee is really saying I'm not prepared to talk to you right now). Your response is just really an ice breaker. It won't work all the time I guess, but it beats putting the phone straight down and is unlikely to do any real damage. -marky
