Unless you have goals, you won’t know if you are wasting time or not, because there won’t be a real purpose to what you are doing. Without goals you will just be going through the motions without a direction and this can be perceived by you to be time wasting – you’re doing a lot of "things" but you aren’t achieving anything.
Start small – don’t set goals so far into the future that it seems as though they will never happen and don’t make them so big that they seem unachievable.
What is a Goal?
“A goal is that towards which effort is directed: aim or end.” Macquarie Dictionary (With this definition it is important to stress the fact that the word “effort” is included. No goals can be met without the effort being put in.)

Biggest Problems People Face?
Most people don’t track, so they don’t know if they are on target to achieving the goal. The old axiom that “you can’t manage what you can’t measure” is very true here.
People can let their egos get in the way and they set goals that are too difficult to achieve.
Most people who almost set goals the right way, never develop a clear plan of
activity goals which are required if the goals are to be achieved.
Most of the time there’s no drive or incentive to reach the goal.
TIP
Don’t talk about your goals. You don’t need to tell everyone what you
will do – just do it!
