This question has been brought to me many times...
And my answer has always been... no. No in the sense that many use it for no marketing objective on their website. BUT, I do have to say, if properly used for branding and identity, then a small 1-3 second riff would be a good addition. Case in Point: THE NEXTEL BEEP. You know the one that you hear when someone places a direct connect call. NOW, that is effective use of a sound. Now, whenever I hear that sound, I know its from a NEXTEL. Now, this is effective use of sound, and if properly done on a website, you can add this feature help users identify you whenever they hear it. Best, Ritchie |

Re: Background music on websites
lol! My husband uses the Nextel direct connect at work...whenever he hears that little beep on the commercial he gets all tense because when he hears it at work it most always means trouble!
As for automatic music on Websites, that's on of my pet peeves...HATE IT! I don't care to listen to tunes when I am surfing and *really* don't care to have it forced on me. Unless I "can't live without" the information on that site, I am out of there immediately.A very short verbal greeting on a business site I can live with, but nothing longer unless it is initiated and can be turned off by me. The audio messages - where you choose to listen to the clip by pressing a button on screen - are a different story. I think that is a wonderful way to deliver a marketing message to those who are more comfortable listening than reading. |

Re: Background music on websites
Yes Rain,
It is possible to do that, and it would incorporate javascripting. A "button" to press on client side browser, an event handler to submit the request via javascripting, and the actual playing of the sound. Go to http://www.javascript.com and you may find a free script for download. |
