The important factor in playing multimedia files is the type of file you upload to your server, and the availability of the clients (your visitors) computer to play that file.

So, in the case of videos, look at what type of multimedia players most likely your target visitor may use, and use the file type that corresponds to them. Or else your visitor will have to download a plugin online, and that will disrupt the flow of your site. And possibly you may lose the prospect.
