We know that sending a gift is a great way to motivate employees. What makes the difference, though, is creating a total motivational package by sending a personal note before or after you send the gift. This is a simple way to maximize what you give, and it requires little time.

For instance, if you decide to send a note before you give employees gifts, let them know in the note that you appreciate the good work that they have done, how important their contribution is, and how their skills benefit the whole company. A sincere "thank you" from the right person at the right time can mean a lot because it shows that you made the effort to notice their achievements. Then when they receive the gift, your appreciation will have been reinforced.

If you want to send a note after employees receive gifts, find ways to encourage them to keep up the good work. If a special project or conference is coming up for which you'd like their involvement, mention it in the note. You can also write something specific about what they did that has helped the company, and how you look forward to continuing to work with them.

Which is better--a handwritten note or email? A handwritten note has a special touch and stands out more since people tend not to send them so often. However, email is a good back-up option and allows busy people to instantly connect with others.
