I came here because I dont like salesmen
Quite a provocative start I know - but let me explain. - I'm not nasty really
I dont mean that personally. I am a lawyer by trade but fed up and looking to get out. I have started a part time business that is going well but I lack selling skills. I have spent a lot of time wondering why it is I can happily stand up in court in front of loads of people without any fear or hesitation and yet when I have to make a phone call I get nervous. I came to the conclusion that I have a completely wrong mindset. I feel as if I am bothering people and that the call is all for my benefit. I know that what I sell is good (its top quality health products), I believe in them 100% and the calls I make are targeted or even follow ups to enquiries. Yet I still have the wrong mindset. I spent sometime with my parents recently and it became obvious that my mother in particular tends to be very negative and especially towards salesmen, I remember when I was young she used to talk about them like they were the lowest of the low. I worry that this has passed on to me subconsciously. So all joking apart, because I seriously think that sales is the most important job in any company, how do I deal with my negative self image, how do I get over the thought that I am bothering people rather than helping them. |

"Top Sales Expert"
|
Hi Steve, and welcome to the forum.
First of all, the feelings you experience are more normal than you think. So don't beat yourself up too much. I'm a seminar facilitator and trainer, so like yourself, have no fear of standing in front of large groups. But when it comes to solicitating business, I get a little shy. To actually pick up the phone and set an appointment, or walk in and cold-call a potential client is very difficult for me. But to have someone set the appointment for me and simply do the meeting is a breeze. I'm going to let some of our experts who do this for a living help you get over your hesitations. I just wanted to assure you that you're not alone. Despite my fears and/or hesitations, I've been in business now for 20 years, so you can still find ways to get around it. I do it by hiring people to do it for me. Hope this helps get you started.
