i'm new in this whole sales stuff, and im quite scared

Hi all, the name is Raymond. I live and work in singapore. I've just entered this sales career 2 weeks ago. and to be honest, it was really a rough ride, and waaayy beyond my comfort zone. our trainer makes us do trainings in the morning, and door to door sales during the evening. and i think, i am the only one doing door to door sales in singapore nowadays! today my trainer give me 3 thick books of company listing, and there must be at least 2,500 companies in those books. I have to call them all! I'm quite burned out with all of these, and I'm starting to doubt whether i can succeed in this career.... what do you guys think? but anyway, i just came across this board, and i've read some of the articles in this forum. they are very good n inspiring. i hope to find more inspiration and solace from this forum.

Hello Raymond. Welcome to the community.

Selling CAN be very scary especially if you don't know what you want to say, not confident in your abilities and-or not comfortable calling on prospects, etc.

If you want help with selling you're in the right place. Ask all the questions you want and run with the answers that work for you.

Welcome aboard Raymond. Doubt, fear and the like find their way into many a salesperson's head. That's quite common. Pounding the phones for hours on end can be a real grind if your attitude isn't where it should be. How well are you doing on the phones?

Hi Raymond,

I'm just north of you, less that 350 Km away in Kuala Lumpur. Welcome to the professional selling community. I believe you'll enjoy it in here amongst the sales professionals around the globe (I see mostly states-side personalities, however. I hope we'll get more participants from the rest of the world as we go along).

You've been in sales now for 2 years, and is still in it. That's a good sign. Most doubters and shirkers wouldn't have lasted the first 3 weeks. I'm still at it from 1972.

Sales is very rewarding if you don't mind the hard work and tension-filled moments of turning a prospect into a customer. And you have to work smart too, knowing where you can get the revenues to meet your sales budgets/targets, how to space them out so that you can always come back regularly with signed contracts to the office --- and to make sure that the customers pay on time.

There are of course, many anxieties and fears in your first few months, and sometimes, years. Fear of rejection is very common. It's like stage fright. But, there are techniques and skills you can learn to overcome them. It just takes experience and a die-hard attitude.

Initiating and managing relationships also play an important role. You have to feel comfortable, and make your customer comfortable with you. You establish rapport and earn his trust. Then the sales process can get along quite smoothly.

Ask questions in here, and I'm sure our friends will be very willing to offer their assistance.

Once againg, welcome to the world of profesional selling.

Ray,

Welcome, alot of good advice has already been given, you found the right place to hone your skills, just remeber to have fun, and be yourself first.

Nobody will buy from you until they like you. find common ground and warm up with people first, the rest will come.

Cold calling is one of the hardest things to do, so don't beat yourself up over it.

Singapore

My wife and I spent some time in Singapore the end of '03 and beginning of '04 when our company opened for business in Malaysia and Singapore. I can give you general and specific sales advice here like everyone. You can also send me a message and I can go into some details of my experience working there if you want.

The best to you.
