First and foremost we need to manage our own careers, regardless of who, if anybody, we work for.
  • Selling is a business and it should be treated as your own, with all the opportunities, setbacks, rewards, and obstacles attached. It is YOUR business.
  • Your employer is a client that you serve.
  • You should learn to personally market and position yourself.
  • You should strive for your own infrastructure within the orgainization that you serve.
  • You should take charge of your own education and personal development.
  • You should know yourself, know your environment, know your given market, and know your competition.
Those are my thoughts based on many years of practice.

Re: Career Management in Selling

Salespeople should pick their first sales position wisely. The industry and type of selling one does could determine a career path that could be difficult to change in the future. Take a first sales position with an eye on where you want to eventually end up in your career.

Work for a sleazy company and you could be typecast as a sleazy salesperson.

Sell widgets and you could be typecast as only a widget salesperson.

Choose B2B and you might have difficulty moving to B2C or vice versa.

On the other hand, working for a company that gives their reps excellent sales training could boost your career forever. Having an excellent sales manager who is adept at coaching could also be a big boost.

I agree with all of that.
